What it is
The Impuesto sobre el Incremento de Valor de los Terrenos de Naturaleza Urbana — a municipal tax on the increase in the cadastral value of urban land since the last transaction. Traditionally paid by the seller (though this is negotiable). Since a 2021 Constitutional Court ruling, sellers can no longer be taxed on a loss. This is a core term in the Costa del Sol property purchase process and one buyers frequently encounter during due diligence.
Why it matters for international buyers
Understanding Plusvalía is part of the standard due diligence framework for any foreign buyer purchasing on the Costa del Sol. A Spanish property lawyer (abogado) will handle the mechanics, but buyers who understand the term can ask better questions and interpret advice more accurately.
